A backup hand is only useful if it shares tiles with your primary. Two hands that need completely different racks are not a plan, they are indecision.
Look for pairs that appear in both. A pair of 2 Bams that serves your first choice and your fallback is worth holding through several discards that would otherwise look wasteful.
Tip
When the two diverge, follow the one whose remaining tiles are most available. Distance matters less than whether the tiles are still in the game.
