There is a point after which switching costs more than it gains.

Switching hands early is nearly free: you have not exposed anything and you have not thrown away much. Switching late is expensive, because the tiles you discarded for the first hand are gone and cannot come back.

The window closes at your first exposure. After that a switch usually means abandoning a group you have already shown, and often a joker with it.

Note

So the real skill is not switching well. It is staying uncommitted long enough that you rarely have to.

Reading ahead is fine. The path takes lessons in order, so this one ticks off once you get here.
