A Singles and Pairs hand is built entirely from singles and pairs, so a joker is useless in every group of it. All eight might as well not be in the game.
You also cannot call a discard to complete a single or a pair, so almost every tile has to be drawn yourself. That is the whole reason these hands pay what they do.
Tip
Only start one from a rack that already holds most of the pairs. This is not a hand you build toward, it is a hand you notice you were dealt.
Reading ahead is fine. The path takes lessons in order, so this one ticks off once you get here.
