An exposed joker is a standing offer. Anyone with the real tile can take it, on any of their turns, and you have no say.
So exposing a joker on a common tile is very different from exposing one on a tile that is nearly gone. If three of the real tile are already discarded, your joker is close to safe.
Tip
Before you expose, count the real tile. That one check tells you whether you are showing a joker or lending one.
