Exposures & Information

When to call, when to let it go

A call is a trade, not a gift.

Intermediate · lesson 13 of 22

Calling a discard moves you forward and tells everyone what you are building. Early in a hand that is a poor trade: you gain one tile and give away your whole direction while there is still plenty of time for people to use it.

The usual guidance is to wait until your hand is genuinely close, seven or eight tiles in, before you expose anything. By then the information costs less because there is less time left to act on it.

Tip

The exception is a tile you are unlikely to see again. If two are already gone, the third one on the table may be your only chance, and that is worth exposing for.

Reading ahead is fine. The path takes lessons in order, so this one ticks off once you get here.
